WESTTEK ANNOUNCES EMBEDDED WINDOWS CE PRINTING INITIATIVE

Initiative Will Focus on Printing from Windows CE-based Digital Camera, Digital Set-top, and Web Phone Implementations

Redmond, WA, February 19, 1999 - WESTTEK L.L.C. today announced that it has begun an initiative to bring its JETCET PRINT technology for Microsoft Windows CE-based Handheld PCs to other embedded implementations of the Windows CE operating system. The initiative will focus on content-rich embedded applications that require high-quality printed output with minimal memory and processor usage.

"WESTTEK is being recognized by the Windows CE development community for our leadership in Windows CE printing," said Tim Wells, president of WESTTEK. "We are committed to further enhancing the printing capabilities of Windows CE, making printing implementations a reality on a diverse set of Windows CE-based embedded technologies."

In addition to the technologies already available in JETCET PRINT, WESTTEK will focus on key technologies required by emerging embedded applications, including:

  • Advanced color halftoning
  • High quality scaling for low resolution images acquired over the Internet
  • Color correction
  • High-speed JPEG and FlashPix compression/decompression
  • Direct hardware interfaces for image scaling and compression/decompression
  • Advanced output technologies over serial, infrared and USB interfaces

WESTTEK originally assisted Microsoft in enhancing the printing features of the Windows CE operating system and has since maintained a leadership position in the implementation of Windows CE printing technologies. "As Windows CE continues to become optimized for a variety of form factors, we are encouraged by companies such as WESTTEK who are strengthening their commitment to the platform," said Tony Barbagallo, group product manager of Windows CE, Microsoft Corp. "WESTTEK has made great strides in extending the printing capabilities of Windows CE-based devices and Microsoft looks forward to the possible results of WESTTEK's expanding interest in the Windows CE operating system."
